38th & Chicago: An Open Discussion September 8, 2011
There will be a gathering at The Third Place Gallery —the photography gallery of Wing Young Huie—focused on the recent stabbing death that took place on 38th & Chicago. This tragic incident has provoked a multitude of reactions that shock and expose our bubbled realities. How will this corner and beyond respond to this and its rippling aftermath?
Steve Floyd, an accomplished photographer and well-respected speaker on urban issues and violence, will present his images of urban street culture and facilitate an open discussion. He has worked with many of the youth connected with this incident since they were children and will provide intimate insights into the dynamics of this situation, questions of safety, and how to move forward.
Floyd, who grew up in one of the toughest neighborhoods of Chicago, has been a youth and gang outreach worker in the Twin Cities for over 25 years and worked in the Hennepin County Attorney’s office as an Advocate for Victims of Gang Violence and Homicide. He also studied theology at North Central University in Minneapolis and photographed in 50 countries.
